I still remember the first time I heard a Gin Wigmore song. Someone sent me a YouTube link and asked me what I thought of it. The song was Kill of the Night, and I said listening to it felt like being grabbed by the short hairs … in a good way. I think about that every time I hear the song, because it’s still true. It’s one of those songs that … well, grabs me every time I hear it; like Gimme Shelter.

I decided to follow up yesterday’s Melody Gardot with today’s Gin Wigmore because I was expecting a huge contrast in the albums, but I was surprised to find a lot of similarity in them even though the sounds are distinctly different. Both are female singers, with lots of songs I enjoy. They both have a lot of musical texture, for lack of a better word, while the singing does most of the heavy lifting. And in both albums, even in the songs I don’t care for, I still think they’re good; just not to my taste. Finally both albums are just sexy, though in very different ways. Melody Gardot is what you listen to when you want to spend all day in bed making love. Gin Wigmore is what you hear bleeding through the walls while you’re fucking in a roadhouse bathroom.
