If you’ve never heard of William Onyeabor, don’t fret. I hadn’t either until I watched this YouTube video by Oscar Boyson:

I found this music to be almost indescribable. Apple Music must feel the same way, apparently, because they classified this album under the genre “Africa” which seems like maybe the least helpful thing I can think of. Can you imagine if every other album I’ve listened to this year was just labeled “North America?” Not super helpful. Anyway, if I were pressed to try to sum up the sound I guess it would be something like this: Imagine if Daniel Johnston was a Nigerian Funk musician.

If you know Daniel Johnston’s music, I guess you could argue for this being a negative, but I see it as positive. The mixing is not good, but considering this guy did literally everything on his own to get this record out including, apparently, stuffing and shrink wrapping the sleeve, I think we can forgive him that.

The music this guy is making is lo-fi, but it’s also beautiful and pure and completely unlike anything else I can think of in the same way Daniel Johnston is. The guy’s a total enigma, too. He just sort of appeared and put out a few albums and then reportedly was “born-again” and disappeared from the music industry in 1985, only to be named West African Industrialist of the Year two years later. What?! This guy has a Wikipedia page well worth reading.
