I was aware of Amy Winehouse well before I had ever heard her music. Because of that, I assumed she was putting out boring pop drivel like most of the other famous artists I’m familiar with but whose music I mostly haven’t heard. I don’t think I heard an Amy Winehouse song and knew it was an Amy Winehouse song until after her death. Once I learned to recognize her sound, I heard her all over the place and didn’t hear a song I didn’t like. Yet I’d never sat down and listened to either of her studio albums until today.

Fuck it’s good. Listening to Back to Black is like watching the TV show Gotham (bare with me). The designers on Gotham have done this really weird thing where the cars are from the 80s, and the cell phones are all pre-smart phone, and the clothes are clothes look older still. Because of this weird mish-mash of props and settings from different time periods, Gotham stands out as being timeless because you can’t pin it down to any actual time period. Back to Black sounds old, but it also sounds like it couldn’t have been made during the time it’s emulating (for lack of a better word). Because of that it’s also timeless. Classic.

I will say, I was really shocked at how bad the mixing was on the album. I had to turn it down a ton, because it honestly sounded like my speakers had blown, but they hadn’t. I’m certain that this isn’t the actual recording though, because I’ve heard some of the songs from this album on the radio or in movies or on Pandora and they sound fine. So maybe it’s just the Apple Music version? I’m not sure what is going on exactly, but I am going to find out. It’s the only thing that kept me from giving this a 5 star rating, and it’s the only thing preventing me from buying the album on iTunes right now.
