Somehow I got Love In Vain stuck in my head this morning, and I realized that while I’ve listened to the masters class Classic Rock artists like Warren Zevon, Tom Waits, and Berlin-era David Bowie, I haven’t covered the fundamentals: The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. Now seems as good a time as any to start rectifying that mistake.

I have to say that while I have heard this record numerous times, I still got a few new things out of this listen. First I realized that I only ever think I don’t likeΒ Monkey ManΒ when it turns out that when I actually listen to it I enjoy it. Upon reflection I’ve come to realize I like the music quite a lot but the lyrics are lacking. More importantly, though, I’ve decided that I’ve had just about enough of You Can’t Always Get What You Want. Which isn’t to say that it’s a bad song. I think you could easily argue it’s both a good song and a classic. Right up there with Stairway to Heaven. And just like Stairway, I’ve heard it so many times that I just don’t really enjoy listening to it anymore. It’s doomed by its own popularity.
