I’ve said several times that a big part of this project is discovering new artists and new songs from artists I already know. Up to now that has included getting recommendations, listening to artists I’m already familiar with, and getting random inspiration from the radio. I’ve had Shazam and/or Sound Hound on my phone since the first time I saw it work, but I usually forget to go back and investigate. In an effort to fix that, I started opened a new note on the Notes app on my phone that’s now a slew of screenshots of Shazam & Sound Hound search results. Today was the first time I actually took one of those screenshots off my phone instead of adding a new one. I have no idea where I first heard S.O.B. but I used Sound Hound to identify it and then added it to that note.

I didn’t know anything about the band or the album, but S.O.B. blew me away so I knew I wanted to seek Nathaniel Rateliff out in the future. Hot damn am I glad I did! This whole album is fantastic! S.O.B. is definitely the best song on the album, but the whole thing is good. Even Shake was good, though not to my taste as much as the rest.

Even though I still haven’t listened to any of their records for this blog yet, I’ve referenced The Black Keys a bunch of times here. The first time I heard them I was sure I was listening to old delta blues and not two white guys from Akron. I had a very similar experience listening to this album today. It sounds very soul / old school rock & roll, but it’s only 2 years old.

If you haven’t heard the album, definitely give it a listen. It’s right up there in style and quality with The Black Keys, as well as Amy Winehouse & Alabama Shakes. I bought the album immediately after I finished listening to it today, and I’m in the middle of listening to it again right now. In fact, I’m writing more than I usually would, because if I go any longer I’ll get to listen to S.O.B. again before sleeping my laptop.

P.S. I think this album wins for best cover art out of all the albums I’ve listened to so far this year.
