The hardest part of this project has been deciding what to listen to. I have gotten about 50 recommendations from other people through the Suggest an Album page, and I have notes to myself in at least three different places for what I want to get around to listening to. Yesterday I ended up dumping all of those recommendations (from everyone including myself) into a text file and then wrote a script to pick an album at random and send an alert with the pick to my phone. It picked Aloe Blacc yesterday, and Nirvana today. Yesterday was even easier though, because my brother recommended an actual album to me, but my note to myself was just the band.

I still remember how big of a deal it was when Kurt Cobain died. But I also remember not really caring all that much. I was only ever vaguely aware of Nirvana. I was too broke when Nevermind was popular to own it, but I did have a “single” w/Smells Like Teen Spirit and a couple of other songs on it.

I was genuinely shocked when I looked at Nirvana’s Wikipedia page today and realized that they only put out three studio albums. Everything else was live recordings and compilations. Since there were only three, I figure I’ll just listen to them all over the next few days.

I’ve listened to Nevermind more times than I can count (even though I never owned it; I think probably everyone else I knew did), and I know I’ve heard most if not all of In Utero. Apparently I’ve never heard Bleach even once. I didn’t recognize a single song. I’ve never really kept up with popular music, but this was surprising to me. Especially given that it’s 1/3 of their entire output.

Anyway, Bleach didn’t really do it for me. About a GirlΒ was the only song I really cared for, and I think that was mostly due to the fact that it was the most palatable. The rest of the album, aside from Negative Creep and Scoff, were fine, I guess but really didn’t do anything for me.
